This research is presented as a proposal to deepen the discussion about the diffusion of research results and knowledge transfer mechanisms around the academic patenting accomplished by the ascribed inventors to the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). This analysis focuses on the protection of knowledge, considering the patents obtained and accumulated by UNAM academics, expressing the relationship between the diffusion and dissemination of knowledge, before and after patenting; in order to identify a pattern that can be recognized through an initial knowledge management model, constituting an initiative for the identification of patterns of knowledge diffusion and protection of knowledge in UNAM academics who have patented.
